Dean Jessop’s new book, *Recognized Before Recommended*, continues the conversation started in *The Great Morph*—this time focusing on what search and AI systems must understand about a business before they can meaningfully include it in an answer.

## The next question after *The Great Morph*

*The Great Morph* examined the shift from traditional lists of search results toward summaries, shortlists and direct answers.

*Recognized Before Recommended* begins with the practical question that follows: What does a search or AI system actually know about a business when it tries to answer for a customer?

A business may provide excellent work and still be overlooked when its name, location, services, website, profiles and outside references do not connect clearly. It may also be recognized correctly while the particular fact a customer needs remains missing, buried or outdated.

> A business cannot be meaningfully recommended until the correct business is recognized and the right facts can be retrieved.

## Recognition first, retrieval second

The book organizes those two problems using two concepts developed by Jessop:

- **Recognized Before Recommended (RBR)** asks whether public information connects to one clear and believable business identity.
- **Retrieval Engine Guidance (REG)** asks whether accurate and useful facts can be found when a customer asks a relevant question.

RBR and REG are not official Google, Microsoft or OpenAI systems. They are not secret ranking formulas, and they do not replace search engine optimization.

They provide business owners with a practical way to examine how clearly their companies are represented across websites, business profiles, directories, reviews and other public sources.

## Written for business owners

The book is intended for people who need to understand the business consequences of AI-assisted discovery without becoming search engineers.

Its examples include contractors, retailers, restaurants, professional services, mobile operators, home-based businesses and startups.

Topics include:

- why conversational questions are changing customer discovery;
- why a recommendation is different from a search ranking;
- how inconsistent information can weaken recognition;
- why specific facts are more useful than broad promotional claims;
- how service areas, qualifications and unusual capabilities should be explained; and
- what must happen after discovery so a customer can call, book, visit or buy.

> The machine is not standing inside the business. It is working with what it can find.

## Practical tools, not promises

*Recognized Before Recommended* includes field observations involving real businesses, a 30-day visibility reset, a business fact sheet, a monthly RBR and REG scorecard, a reader toolkit and a plain-English glossary.

The book does not promise rankings, citations, leads or inclusion in an AI-generated answer. Search and AI results can vary by platform, wording, location, time and personalization.

Its practical focus is the part a business can control: whether its public information is accurate, consistent, specific, supported and connected to a working customer path.
